In recent days, the tranquil atmosphere of Kakamega County Koyonzo Police Station, particularly within Matungu Sub County, was disrupted by an unsettling incident that unfolded at Koyonzo Police Station. The suspected murder incident, reported on March 31, 2024, at 0610hrs, involving two-night guards within Koyonzo market, quickly escalated into a situation of chaos and violence, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The Incident

1. The Suspected Murder Incident

The incident initially stemmed from a suspected murder case involving two-night guards within Koyonzo market. The grim discovery prompted swift action from local law enforcement, leading to the removal of the bodies to Bungoma County referral morgue for autopsy.

2. Escalation of Violence

As police officers were in the process of handling the situation, tensions rose amongst the local populace. The situation spiraled out of control as enraged individuals resorted to violence, sparking a riot within the vicinity.

3. Attack on Koyonzo Police Station

The rioters, fueled by anger and frustration, targeted Koyonzo Police Station, breaching its defenses and causing extensive damage to the station building. Furthermore, they torched five motorcycles, which were being held as exhibits, exacerbating the destruction.

Injuries Sustained by Officers

Amidst the chaos, several officers deployed to contain the situation bore the brunt of the violence, sustaining various injuries:

Koyonzo Police Station

  • CI Philip Luchevelei: Injuries on the head, left ear, right leg, and back.
  • Ip Cyrus Kanyi: Injuries to the right hand and left eye.
  • Ip Daniel Rono: Injuries on the right leg, chest, and head.
  • Pc Fredrick Rono: Injuries on the left eye.
  • Pc Robert Ongicho: Injuries on the chest.
  • Cliff Abondo: Injury to the right hand.
  • Pc Benson Mwololo: Injuries on the forehead, right hand, and hip.
  • PC Nobert Wagude: Injuries on the left hand and chest.
  • pc Joel Tum: Injuries on the chest, head, and right leg.
  • pc Emmanuel Cheptumo: Injuries on the left knee.

All injured officers were promptly transported to Bliss Medical Facilities Center within Mumias for urgent medical attention.

Further Damage and Losses

The unrest extended beyond the confines of the police station, with rioters venting their anger on property belonging to police officers. The Motor Vehicle Landcruiser attached to Matungu Police Station fell victim to the violence, sustaining damage to its windscreen from pelted stones.

Additionally, the rental houses of three officers, namely Pc Emmanuel Cheptumo, pc/D Abraham Kosgei, and Pc Daniel Rapemo, were targeted, with all their belongings set ablaze. Two motorcycles belonging to officers were also damaged during the chaos.

Response and Restoration of Normalcy

Despite the widespread havoc wreaked by the rioters, law enforcement agencies swiftly moved to restore order within Koyonzo Center. The Socio Matungu investigating team has been tasked with unraveling the complexities surrounding the incident and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

In conclusion, the events that transpired at Koyonzo Police Station serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of peace and the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order amidst societal unrest.
