Gender based violence
Kenya is facing a severe gender based violence (GBV) crisis, with rising femicide cases. Between August and October 2024, at least 97 women were killed, particularly in informal GB settlements. An example of the tragic death of Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei in September among others, highlighted the dangers of intimate partner violence.
In response, the Kenyan government declared GBV the top security threat, forming a specialized police unit and a presidential task force. Community-led initiatives, including self-defense training for women, have also emerged. However, activists argue that legal protections remain inadequate, with gaps such as the lack of laws criminalizing spousal rape.
Cultural and societal barriers further hinder progress, as deep-rooted patriarchal norms perpetuate violence. While efforts to combat GBV are increasing, meaningful change requires stronger legal frameworks, effective enforcement, and widespread societal transformation. The crisis underscores the urgent need for a multi-pronged approach to protect women and ensure justice.
