President Samia Suluhu Hassan has sparked conversation across the region after boldly declaring that Tanzania is performing better economically and socially than several Western and regional counterparts, including the United States, Europe, and fellow East African nations.

Speaking during a national address on Sunday, President Samia said that despite global economic turbulence and regional instability, Tanzania has remained remarkably steady. She credited her administration’s strategic investments in infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and education, as well as an emphasis on internal stability and public sector discipline.

“Some people may not believe it, but even compared to the US and Europe, Tanzania is in a much better position when it comes to food security, inflation control, and peace,” she stated.

The Head of State pointed to steady economic growth rates, a manageable inflation rate, and a low debt-to-GDP ratio as evidence of Tanzania’s resilience. She also emphasised the country’s ongoing mega projects like the Standard Gauge Railway and the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project as symbols of national ambition.

Turning to the region, President Samia noted that Tanzania’s economic indicators and political calm set it apart from its East African peers, who are grappling with unrest, currency depreciation, or fiscal distress.

Her remarks, though bold, come at a time when many African countries are facing heavy economic pressure due to global interest rate hikes, climate shocks, and post-COVID fiscal strain. Yet, Tanzania has avoided the debt crises that have rocked several economies.

Analysts say the president’s comments are likely aimed at boosting national confidence and asserting Tanzania’s rising stature on the continental stage. Critics, however, have challenged the comparison, pointing to areas like healthcare access, human rights, and youth unemployment where Tanzania still has ground to cover.

Nonetheless, President Samia’s message was clear: Tanzania, under her leadership, is charting its course and doing so with confidence.
