In a landmark ruling, the High Court in Eldoret has sentenced police officers Emmanuel Barasa and Godwine Wekesa Sirengo to 35 years in prison each for the torture and murder of Dennis Lusava in 2020.

The chilling incident occurred at the Mbururu Police Post in Likuyani, Kakamega County, where the officers brutally assaulted Lusava before dumping his body in River Nzoia.

The verdict brings closure to a painful five-year battle for justice by Lusava’s family and human rights advocates, who have consistently pointed to the case as a glaring example of unchecked police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Kenya.

The judgment has been widely hailed as a significant step toward accountability for security forces, with activists urging further action to address systemic abuse and impunity within the police service.
