Lagos State Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh has confirmed that televangelist Pastor Paul Adefarasin is being investigated for committing a criminal offense after allegedly pointing a stun gun at another individual. Jimoh explained that, although the device is non-lethal, its use in such a manner is considered illegal under Nigerian law. He made these remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, where he discussed the ongoing investigation.

Jimoh clarified, “Nothing qualifies as an offense unless it is defined as such by the law. For instance, under the Firearms Act, if someone modifies an object—such as wood—to resemble a gun and uses it to intimidate or dispossess someone, that act constitutes armed robbery. Similarly, pointing a stun gun at someone and instilling fear at that moment is an offense. The police are strictly following legal procedures.”

The commissioner added that the stun gun retrieved from Adefarasin is classified as prohibited riot control equipment under Nigerian law. Although Adefarasin has been granted bail, the investigation continues. “We sent him an invitation letter. We had a warrant of arrest ready in case he declined to respond. However, he presented himself voluntarily and was questioned by the investigative team already assigned to the case,” Jimoh said.

The case was triggered by a video that emerged earlier this month, showing Adefarasin in a Range Rover, holding what many viewers assumed was a gun, while conversing with someone outside the vehicle. Adefarasin later addressed the controversy on his official X account, denying any misconduct: “You might have seen a circulating video of me, which some have misinterpreted as me brandishing a firearm. I want to make it clear—it was not a firearm, and I did not point it at anyone.”

Jimoh also stated that the individual seen in the video, allegedly threatened by the pastor and identified as a content creator, will be summoned by police to give a formal statement. “Social media indicates that the person he pointed it at is a content creator. We have obtained his address and will take his statement as soon as possible,” the commissioner noted.

He concluded by assuring that the case will be handled with transparency: “Although the pastor is currently out on bail, the investigation is still ongoing, and we will make the findings public once the process is complete so Nigerians can be fully informed.
