Meru County Cracks Down on Leaks Staff Warned Against Feeding Bloggers and Social Media

Meru County Cracks Down: In a bold move to safeguard the integrity of its internal operations, the Meru County Government has issued a stern directive aimed at curbing the unauthorised release of confidential information. The county administration, under the stewardship of Governor Kawira Mwangaza, has put its foot down, warning all county staff to steer clear of leaking sensitive details to bloggers, digital journalists, and social media users.

The memo, which was circulated internally earlier this week, reads like a wake-up call to public servants who may have become too cosy with the online rumour mill. “Any employee found culpable of sharing confidential government information without authorisation will face disciplinary action,” the directive warned, in no uncertain terms.

The county leadership expressed growing concern over the rampant spread of internal documents and privileged communication across digital platforms, often distorted or taken out of context to fuel online drama and political propaganda.

“We’re not trying to muzzle anyone,” a senior county official told us on condition of anonymity. “But when every memo ends up on a blogger’s page before it even reaches the desk it was meant for, we have a serious problem.”

In recent months, Meru has found itself at the centre of several social media storms, with leaked documents sparking controversy, confusion, and sometimes outright misinformation. The administration now hopes to tighten the screws and restore a sense of professionalism and confidentiality within its ranks.

The directive also reminds staff of their contractual obligation to uphold the values of transparency, accountability, and loyalty, adding that the right channels exist for whistleblowing and internal feedback without resorting to public leaks.

As digital platforms continue to play an outsized role in shaping public opinion, Meru County’s leadership is drawing a line in the sand. The message? Gossip is not governance, and leaks have consequences.

Only time will tell if this tough talk will translate into a leak-free administration, but one thing is clear: in Meru, the war against digital whistleblowers has officially begun.
