Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially announced his intention to run for president in the upcoming 2027 general elections, setting the stage for one of the most unexpected bids in Kenya’s political history.
In a revealing interview with NTV, Maraga boldly branded himself as “the Gen Z presidential candidate”, saying the time had come for a new generation of leadership. He emphasised that his mission is to lead, mentor, and empower young people across the country.
“The youth are disillusioned, angry, and tired of recycled politics. I’m stepping in to walk with them, guide them, and show that integrity can still win an election,” said Maraga.
He further stated that his campaign will not rely on traditional political financiers, but instead, he will turn to ordinary Kenyans for logistical support through public donations.
“I want this to be a people-driven movement. If Kenyans believe in change, they will fund it,” he said.
The former CJ’s move has sparked debate online, with many praising his clean record and bold move, while others question how far his campaign can go in Kenya’s money-driven political landscape.
With this announcement, the 2027 race just got a shake-up up and Gen Z may have found an unlikely champion.
