NAIROBI: Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja found himself on the defensive after facing the Senate over the chilling death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who was found lifeless in a solitary cell at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on June 8.
Pressed for answers, Kanja seemed more inclined to tiptoe than talk, repeatedly sidestepping the big question, ‘Why was Ojwang left alone, against standard police protocols?’
In a session marked by tension and evasion, the IG leaned heavily on the ongoing investigations, urging senators and the public to hold off judgement.
“Let’s allow the investigators to do their job,” Kanja said, deflecting direct queries about who made the call to isolate the outspoken digital activist.
The Senate, however, wasn’t satisfied. Neither, it seems, is a public increasingly wary of unexplained deaths behind bars. With more questions than answers, the case of Albert Ojwang is quickly turning into a national puzzle that Kenyans aren’t about to forget.
