In a bold and emotional move, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has announced he will return his prestigious state honors—the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) and Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS)—declaring they’ve lost meaning in light of corruption charges he calls politically motivated.
“How can I carry the title of a state honoree while being paraded in court over corruption allegations? Those honors have been tainted,” he said.
Governor Natembeya was arrested and charged on May 21, accused of receiving over Sh 3 million in conflict-of-interest dealings with county suppliers. Released on bail, he’s been barred from office for 60 days and restricted from public commentary—yet he remains defiant.
“These charges are not about justice. They’re about silencing voices that speak the truth.”
While the High Court has halted the prosecution pending a petition hearing, Natembeya’s message is clear: real honor comes from the people, not titles.
