The Allegations

Rehema Badi, a marketing strategist at Mitchell Cotts under Elavon Logistics Limited, finds herself at the center of controversy. Rumors abound that she has been facilitating the importation of contaminated sugar into the country, allegedly in collusion with powerful sugar barons.

The Seizure

More than 1,112 metric tonnes of sugar, worth Sh214 million, were seized by the police before it could be released into the market. The sugar, imported from Port Louis, Mauritius, was suspected to be contaminated and unfit for consumption.

The Investigation

Documents from the Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Revenue Authority reveal that Elavon Logistics Limited was responsible for the importation. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of Rehema’s involvement and possible connections to sugar cartels.

Corruption Allegations

Serious allegations of corruption have surfaced, suggesting that Rehema may have corrupted and bribed officials from the Kenya Ports Authority and other agencies to facilitate the release of the contaminated sugar. Meetings allegedly took place at Nyali Mall, where deals worth millions of shillings were struck.

Legal Action

The importer had made a declaration in February 2024, attempting to release the consignment into the market. However, a seizure order was issued, preventing the sugar from reaching consumers. The Food, Drugs, and Chemical Substance Act ensured that the entire consignment was seized and prevented from being released.

Rehema’s Influence

Despite the seizure order, Rehema reportedly attempted to influence the release of the cargo into the market. She allegedly made threats and used her connections within the Kenya Revenue Authority to push for the release.

Director’s Response

James Rariaya, director of operations at Mitchell Cotts CFS, has denied any wrongdoing. He assures the public that no contaminated sugar has been released for consumption and that samples have been taken for laboratory testing.

The seizure of contaminated sugar in Mombasa has raised serious questions about the integrity of importation processes and the involvement of individuals like Rehema Badi. Investigations are ongoing, and the public eagerly awaits answers regarding the source and extent of the contamination.
