Samuel Karuga Wachiuri Charged in Sh5.9M Sugar, Rice Scam

Samuel Karuga Wachiuri, 37, is accused of fraudulently obtaining Sh5,921,600 from Grace Njeri Irungu by falsely claiming he could supply 3,000 bags of rice and 250 bags of 50-kilogram sugar—a claim he allegedly knew was untrue.

The offense is said to have occurred in Nairobi between May 6 and May 15, 2025, with the intent to defraud. He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Caroline Mugo.

The prosecution opposed his release on bail on grounds that Wachiuri is a flight risk and likely to interfere with witnesses.

According to an affidavit by Sergeant Patricia Mwendwa, the police received information that the suspect was fleeing the country.

“Upon confirmation of the information, arrangements were made, and the suspect was apprehended by DCI officers within the Isebania border post, trying to cross the border to Tanzania on 22nd May 2025,” the investigator said.

Sergeant Mwendwa also stated that the accused person has been threatening the complainant that he would post on social media compromising photos of her to make sure he ruins her family and her public image if she does not withdraw the case.

Through his lawyer, Wachiuri opposed the application and asked the court to release him on lenient cash bail of Sh 50,000.

In addition , the court heard that Wachiuri is married, and there was no evidence in support of the allegations by the officer.
