Nyeri Town descended into chaos after a horrifying twist in the disappearance of 7-year-old Tamara Blessing Kabura. And trust Kenyans to turn grief into thunder. When the truth came out, the whole town went, “Wacha mchezo!”
On Tuesday, a Nyeri court ordered the main suspect, Nicholas Julius Macharia, alias “Macha”, the porter, to be detained for 14 more days as detectives dig deeper into the spine-chilling case.
Little Tamara vanished for four agonizing days. Then, a plot twist straight out of a horror movie: CCTV near Nyeri’s main market showed her last walking with a man, not a monster in a hoodie, but the familiar “Macha” who often helped traders around the market.
The footage blew the case wide open. Residents quickly identified the man, and police swung into action. Under interrogation, Macha pulled the unthinkable; he led officers to his Witemere slum shack. There, beneath his bed, inside a gunny bag, Tamara’s lifeless body was buried in a shallow grave.

As news broke, Nyeri’s residents exploded in fury. In a scene that can only be described as heartbreaking and historic, mourners turned protesters carried Tamara’s body through the streets and delivered it to Nyeri Police Station, chanting for justice like a scene from a revolution.
The town turned into a tear-gassed battleground Monday evening, as crowds clashed with police. Teargas flew, tempers flared, and by Tuesday, Nyeri was still on edge, the pain and anger hanging as thick as the teargas cloud.
The suspect, now in custody, will reappear in court on June 10. Until then, Nyeri watches, mourns, and waits, demanding not just justice but answers.
And somewhere, a bed lies empty, but the nightmares it held will haunt the town for a long time.
