Human rights activist Hanifa Adan was left visibly shaken and distraught after she was allegedly assaulted during Tuesday’s protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on June 17.
The harrowing incident took place amid growing fears that peaceful protests are being infiltrated by violent, unidentified individuals, many of whom arrive on motorcycles and disguise themselves as part of the demonstrating crowd.
Eyewitnesses described how the attackers, who appeared to be plain-clothed and unidentifiable, moved stealthily through the crowd before singling out and targeting protesters. Adan, known for her outspoken activism and advocacy for justice, was reportedly one of their victims.
“They blended in with us. Then suddenly they pounced,” said one protester who witnessed the chaos unfold.
The attack has sparked widespread concern, with many accusing authorities of turning a blind eye to the increasing presence of these rogue elements, who seem intent on intimidating demonstrators and derailing the movement.
Rights groups have condemned the violence, calling for an immediate investigation into the incident and urging the government to ensure the safety and rights of protesters are protected. As the country continues to grapple with public unrest, many are now questioning whether the violence is a deliberate attempt to suppress dissent and silence voices calling for accountability.
