James Mbugua Gitau

A Nairobi-based employee, James Mbugua Gitau, of the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has been arraigned for allegedly forging his secondary school certificate and fraudulently receiving over Sh6.2 million in salaries.

The accused, James Mbugua Gitau, who worked as a wastewater operator in Nairobi, appeared before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecution, Gitau illegally earned Sh6,274,572.95 from the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company between June 2016 and December 31, 2023, after securing employment using a forged academic certificate.

The charge alleges that Gitau presented a fake Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in the name of James Mbugua Gitau, purporting to have attained a mean grade of C Plain from Kagiro Secondary School. The document was claimed to be officially issued by the Kenya National Examination Council.

The court heard that the forgery was committed on or about June 15, 2016, in Nairobi, where Gitau allegedly used the falsified certificate to obtain employment at the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.

He is also accused of knowingly and fraudulently presenting the forged document with the intent to deceive.

The Nairobi court has ordered Gitau to deposit a cash bail for his release as the case proceeds.
